A study of 1.000 Iranian high school students suggests that family history may play an important role in whether a teen develops moderate to severe acne.
According to an article by Amy Norton for Reuters, "Researchers found that 14 percent of the students had moderate to severe acne, with the prevalence varying significantly based on family history. Of teenagers whose parents or siblings ever had moderate to severe acne, 20 percent had the same problem." The study itself was published in the September issue of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. This rate was only 10 percent for teen with no such family history.
Also mentioned in this article is the suggestion by resaearchers that diet may also affect the severity of acne breakouts. I found this particularly interesting because I have alwayys been told that diet does not actually have an affect on acne and it is just a myth. However, researchers in this study claim that more recent finding show evidence of "higher risk amongteens who often ate greasy or sugary foods."
